Rockbrook students help Junior Fast Trackers

The Harcourt Junior Fast Track programme is now in its second year at Citywise in Jobstown. This year over forty young people attend weekly for afterschool classes, and for wider learning opportunities. the aim is to encourage young people in their learning, helping to make it fun, and opening up their eyes to the possibility of further education.
Role models are vital on such programmes and Transition Year students from Rockbrook Park School in Rathfarnham turn up weekly to help run the programme. This communty involvement is a great help to the volunteers as well, as they grow in confidence and people management skills as well as moving a step nearer to the President's Awards.
Chris, Conor, Tim, Brian and Evan are well liked by the children on Junior Fast Track and are making their impact felt, with a very good weekly attendance at the programme.

Fast Track Volunteers Night

A very successful Fast Track Volunteering Night was held at the Durkan Centre on Wednesday, February 17. despite it being mid-term, or maybe because it was mid-term, there was a good group of students along during the day for their Fast Track classes. Later in the evening over twenty people attended the training event. Cathal, a Maths graduate from DIT spoke about his experiences over the past few months teaching on Fast Track. Azeez, a Fast Track 'graduate', now Trinity Science student, now Fast Track teacher, spoke enthusiastically of how he was supported over the years. Laurence, a young leader and school student, spoke about how Fast Track was currently helping him. His contribution was a great encouragement to all volunteers present. The evening finished with a practical presentation by Mark Hamilton of Citywise on the approaches to teaching smalll Fast Track groups and on the pitfalls to the avoided. His key message to volunteer teachers was 'keep students busy, ensure that they are doing the work in the tutorial or class'.
