Holy Week Camino walk in aid of Citywise.Your support is needed.
The Camino, here we come! During Holy Week, Citywiser's Mark, Paul, and Peter are embarking on 125 km pilgrimage walk to Santiago de Compostella together with eight students, all in aid of Citywise.
The Camino is a famous pilgrimage trail to the tomb of St James in Santiago, in the north west of Spain, There are a few distinct trails approaching the city from eastern, northerly and southerly directions, with the approach from the east the best trodden and most famous. For over one thousand years, pilgrims have walked the trail, beginning in the north of Europe, or in Dublin (thus St James gate), or near the Russian steppes.
This fundraising walk is a more prudent undertaking. The group intend to walk for five days to cover the 125 km and gain the pilgrimage indulgence, while raising money for the empty Citywise coffers. The students involved are all Transition Year students in Rockbrook Park School (see www.rockbrook.ie) and they will be accompanied by teacher Jackie Brennan. The group is paying its own way so that all funds raised will go directly towards Citywise programmes in Jobstown and Ballymun. Many of the group, for example, Brian, Conor, Jack, Christopher, James and Aidan have been volunteer leaders with Citywise over the past year.
Well done lads. All you, the reader, need do now is press the donate now button on the ammado website or the Ammado button on the Citywise website (www.citywise.ie) and make your donation to us.
Currently Citywise has sixteen highly disaffected young men, who are under 16 and out of the school system, attending each day studying for their Junior Cert. Citywise Fast Track programmes, which are geared to helping young school attenders in disadvantaged community areas to make it to college, have almost 150 beneficaries and sixty volunteers helping them. Citywise also provides a range of educational and social supports for other young people in west Tallaght, Ballymun, west Belfast and in the Midlands. None of these programmes have statutory funding and so depend primarily on the help of individual or corporate donors. Tax relief is available on donations over €250.

Rockbrook students help Junior Fast Trackers
The Harcourt Junior Fast Track programme is now in its second year at Citywise in Jobstown. This year over forty young people attend weekly for afterschool classes, and for wider learning opportunities. the aim is to encourage young people in their learning, helping to make it fun, and opening up their eyes to the possibility of further education.
Role models are vital on such programmes and Transition Year students from Rockbrook Park School in Rathfarnham turn up weekly to help run the programme. This communty involvement is a great help to the volunteers as well, as they grow in confidence and people management skills as well as moving a step nearer to the President's Awards.
Chris, Conor, Tim, Brian and Evan are well liked by the children on Junior Fast Track and are making their impact felt, with a very good weekly attendance at the programme.

Fast Track Volunteers Night
A very successful Fast Track Volunteering Night was held at the Durkan Centre on Wednesday, February 17. despite it being mid-term, or maybe because it was mid-term, there was a good group of students along during the day for their Fast Track classes. Later in the evening over twenty people attended the training event. Cathal, a Maths graduate from DIT spoke about his experiences over the past few months teaching on Fast Track. Azeez, a Fast Track 'graduate', now Trinity Science student, now Fast Track teacher, spoke enthusiastically of how he was supported over the years. Laurence, a young leader and school student, spoke about how Fast Track was currently helping him. His contribution was a great encouragement to all volunteers present. The evening finished with a practical presentation by Mark Hamilton of Citywise on the approaches to teaching smalll Fast Track groups and on the pitfalls to the avoided. His key message to volunteer teachers was 'keep students busy, ensure that they are doing the work in the tutorial or class'.

Latest newsletter (June 09) available to download
As you can see from the accompanying newsletter it was a busy six months for Citywise all around the country. Our big pressure for the coming six months is financial. The recession is biting hard: so all the support we can get is needed over the summer period.
Thank you

Aiming high for Shamrock Rovers
Citywise members will act as ballboys at Rovers' upcoming game against Sligo next week, Unfortunately, all ballboy positions for the Madrid match are filled but we don't mind the consolation prize!
The match programme will explain a little about the work that Citywise carries out in west Tallaght and elsewhere.
Aiming higher – no matter what you are at
Citywise on Fortunestown Way in Tallaght is a youth centre with a difference.
It provides a range of activities: sports such as soccer, canoeing and hiking; club activities such as music, computers and cookery; afterschool activities such as study, homework help and academic classes; and a range of leadership training opportunities in youth work and the President’s Award. The difference is that it just doesn’t run programmes. It tries to get young people to aim higher, to make the best use of their talents, whatever these might be.
From eight to eighteen, young people are welcome. There they learn how to work well, to develop new pastimes and to make new friends. They may even make it to college as a result of the help they receive.
Citywise also has fulltime education for young men aged 12 to 16 years who find themselves outside of the school system. This programme, called Midschool, has been a great support in helping many find their educational feet again so that they do their Junior Certificate and then move on to better things.
Citywise is always looking for support, as it needs capable volunteers to help out in its wide range of activities, and for companies and individuals to give it some financial support.
Further information can be had from their website at www.citywise.ie. Citywise currently has a campaign to put 50 canoes on the Liffey for this year’s 50th anniversary Liffey Descent, and also has some members committed to a round-Ireland fundraising cycle during August.
To check it out contact John at Citywise, Fortunestown Way, Jobstown, telephone 4049736 or email info@citywise.ie

Bag packing a success
On the first weekend in July Dunnes stores in the Square kindly hosted Citywise members for a fundrasing bagpack. Over 100 young people helped out on the tills over the weekend and close on €2000 was fundraised. This money will go towards helping to run the busy summer programme at the Citywise centre in Jobstown. Thank you very much Dunnes for having us.

Thank you for supporting Citywise.
Citywise provides education, youth activities and leadership training to young people in West Tallaght. Over 500 people regularly attend our centre and we encourage them to develop their sporting, music or other talents as well as their capacity to learn. We encourage everyone to give of their best.
The range of activities is enormous. For some who are interested in healthy pastimes Citywise is their club (Citywise Clubs). For others it is an education centre which helps get them to college (Fast Track programmes). Yet for others, who have dropped out of the education system at an early age, it is their way towards the Junior Cert and a second chance (Midschool).
We don’t get state funding, so we depend on ordinary people like you and ordinary companies like to one you work for their support. We also encourage people to volunteer their time to help run our programmes and to help in fund-raising.
So if you can help, or if you are interested in any of our activities, or if you want someone to do one of our summer programmes then see our website www.citywise.ie or contact John on info@citywise.ie or telephone 4049736 or drop into the Durkan Centre on Fortunestown Way
A big thank you to Dunnes Stores for having us this weekend
